The Icelandic Trilogy (Northlanders #42)
brianwood: The next era begins.  This story will take us to issue #50. Northlanders is freaking fantastic and everyone should be reading it. I especially recommend the story “The Plague Widow”, in which Wood excels once again at writing female characters I love.

The Guardian: Creep by Radio Eds - audio slideshow →
So in the wake of the whole “Radiohead is publishing a newspaper with their next album” thing, a bunch of Guardian writers got together to cover “Creep”. It’s better than you’d think.

Thought for the day
If you’re a devout follower of Gaga, her concert is Easter Mass in Piazza San Pietro. If you’re a weekly churchgoer, it’s your local Christmas Midnight Mass. If you’re the kind who only shows up for the major holidays, it’s a respectable-if-preachy service. If you’re Gaga-agnostic, the sermons probably bore you, but you like the songs. And if you’re...

#twitrelief is not, in fact, the feeling you get...
So if you’re from the UK or a crazy Anglophile like me, you’re probably aware of the Comic Relief charity and all the fundraising shenangians that they get up to every year for Red Nose Day. This year they’re running something called #twitrelief, where participating celebs will follow the winner on Twitter for 90 days, retweet one of your tweets, and post a tweet using your...

Petition to have David Tennant carry the Olympic... →
I didn’t really care for that episode and to be honest, the Olympics sentimentality was a big reason for that (and I say that as someone who will be watching the coverage almost every night). However, I have to admit that it would amuse me no end to see Tennant be part of the torch relay.

Word of Mouth blog + How to cook the perfect ... |... →
I love Cook’s Illustrated and really enjoy the nerdy, nuts-and-bolts elements of cooking: the why and how of mixing ingredients and all that. So naturally Felicity Cloake’s “How to cook the perfect …” series in the Guardian is something that I look forward to gleefully every Thursday. If you haven’t been following it, check it out. The recipes that I’ve...

Doctor slang is a dying art →
Best term in the entire piece: “pumpkin positive”, “which refers to the implication that a penlight shone into the patient’s mouth would encounter a brain so small that the whole head would light up.” I think I’m going to start using this one myself. I’m all for respect and manners and propriety in the workplace and all that, but I couldn’t stop...

Find your name's best anagram →
fleetfootedfox: my best anagram is TARDY FEMALE.   Depending on which variation of my name I enter into the generator, I get KISSER OR ANKLE, OK SERVANTLIKE SINNERS, RANK OR KISS, or KEEN IN INTERVALS. I think the last one’s my favorite.
