problematic entertainment and good rulers
(Original quote deleted and reposted because my own windy comments started getting in the way.)
Laurie Penny, “Game of Thrones and the Good Ruler Complex”:
None of which is to say the story isn’t exciting. That’s rather the point. A story doesn’t need to be comfortable, realistic or generous towards the downtrodden in order to be gripping; and a piece of art doesn’t have to be...

Don’t suppose anyone knows the artist behind this?
That’s a Richard Hess painting
Excellent; thank you!

Texas Weather Blog: Why is it so hot? →
All you wanted to know about how a high-pressure system is making the weather in Texas so goddamn miserable right now.
I guess my other question is, where do these high-pressure systems come from? Is it just a consequence of the movement of global air currents? Is it a feedback loop—heat causing high pressure which creates conditions for yet more heat and so on? Some combination of these things?

Sometimes the Finder of Lost Things fails.
The internet will not yield up a drawing by Michael Zulli, Dave Sim, and Gerhard that depicts Cerebus sitting in Sweeney Todd’s barber chair.
It did, however, inform me that the drawing is called “Two Bits” and is in Cerebus #154. I should be able to do the heavy lifting, dig that out, and scan it. I don’t think I dumped all my Cerebi after Sim went off the rails; at the...

It was 1963, and 16-year-old Bruce McAllister was sick of symbol-hunting in English class. Rather than quarrel with his teacher, he went straight to the source: McAllister mailed a crude, four-question survey to 150 novelists, asking if they intentionally planted symbolism in their work. Seventy-five authors responded. Here’s...

This is otherwise known as “Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin meet cute.”

A thing I learned just now.
Er. It appears that there is a porn actor or model (or just a well-built fellow who likes getting his kit off) by the name of Patrick O’Brian. So those who are looking for more Aubrey-Maturin quotes and funsies (Sara and anyone else) should browse with caution.

– Patrick O’Brian, H.M.S. Surprise
I think this is pretty much everyone’s favorite scene from this book, right?

a bright wall in a dark room.: TV MONTH: Downton... →
I thought this was a pretty good roundup on the appeal of Downton Abbey, and I particularly like this observation:
As oppressive as I manage it would be to live under such rigid social and moral codes, I still can’t help but be drawn to the idea of a common decency. Like I previously mentioned, one of the things that prevents Downton from becoming your average upstairs/downstairs tale is the...

"There Will Come Soft Rains," Ray Bradbury →
rutabagaparsnip:
I will never forget the first time I read this short story, which was in one of those massive literature anthology textbooks foisted on sixth graders in English classes. Being a reader, I often read ahead of schedule, and I’d read stories that weren’t assigned. This one was never assigned, and the chill I felt from it that day in study hall still lives within me every time I...
