The awkward moment when the music in Rick Perry’s anti-gay ad is by gay American composer Aaron Copland, who by the way was a communist.

The music in question actually isn’t by Copland, as the New Yorker’s classical critic Alex Ross explains on his blog. It’s trying damn hard to be, though, and the point still stands that right-wing pols have persisted in appropriating Copland’s music and his “all-American” style without being particularly aware of the facts of the man himself. Ross: “Whoever put together Perry’s ad is hardly the first to appropriate Copland’s style in questionable fashion, although I don’t recall encountering it in an anti-gay context; that may be some kind of creepy innovation.”
